Client Outcome Story:  Twenty-two years ago when I was the Executive Director of the Easter Seal Society I had the pleasure of partnering with the Executive Director of American Heart Association to start the Hilo Stroke Club. It was a hit from the start. Many strokers and their loved ones attended. They shared their stories, laughed and cried and generally had a fine time. Fumie Hamakawa became the leader, a position he holds to this day. His inspirational words and his positive life style continue to provide comfort and encouragement to all who attend. So, it was with enormous pleasure that I welcomed the Hilo Stroke Club to their first meeting here at the Hawaii County Office of Aging’s AGING AND DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTER. This is where I now work and it felt wonderful to be united with a group for which I have so much aloha. It will be just wonderful to see them each month, to meet new members and greet the ones who have kept the program going. I am grateful to the American Heart Association for supporting this important group for all the intervening years. Twenty two years is an impressive record! Written by and in loving memory of Sally Wehrsig who passed away on August 21, 2009.
