Agency Mission Statement:
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. We help alleviate human suffering by doing the above.
Funded Programs:
Community Education Program: This program increases awareness of disaster preparedness in the community and increases knowledge and skills on how to identify an emergency situation, how to act during an emergency, how to prevent unintentional injury of people under the participant's care and increases awareness of preventative safety measures in schools, in the home and at the workplace.
Disaster Response: This program provides disaster relief assistance to help victims of disasters overcome their physical and emotional distress and to meet their immediate emergency needs as they begin to rebuild their lives after a tragedy. This assistance includes food, clothing, shelter, mental health counseling, and financial assistance to help families recover more quickly.
Client Outcome Stories:
Community Education: "Being in the Certified Nurse Aide Program has helped me to break out of my shell and get to know people. I love the feeling of helping those who are in need. The skills I have learned while training will help me help those who need it. My goal is to be a RN and work with newborn babies." -Frances Akui-Asperilla
Disaster Response: When lava destroyed Petty Fallwind's Kalapana home in January, 2011, the Hawaii Red Cross came to her aid. Red Cross volunteers assisted her with her immediate emergency needs (food, bedding and linens, a storage container and 3 nights stay in a hotel) and crisis counseling. She was also provided with referrals to local community organizations for additional assistance.
