Agency Mission Statement:
The American Red Cross, a humanirarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. We help alleviate human suffering by doing the above.
Funded Programs:
Community Education Program: This program increases awareness of disaster preparedness in the community and increases knowledge and skills on how to identify an emergency situation, how to act during an emergency, how to prevent unintentional injury of people under the participant's care and increases awareness of preventative safety measures in schools, in the home and at the workplace.
Disaster Reponse: This program provides disaster relief assistance to help victims of disasters oversome their physical and emotional distress and to meet their immediate emergency needs as they begin to rebuild their lives after a tragedy. This assistance includes food, clothing, shelter, mental health counseling, and financial assistance to help families recover more quickly.
Client Outcome Story: Kurtistown Fire: Beinning on 12/18/09, the Big Island experienced one of the worst electricl storms in a long time which caused a 5-hour loss of power in Paradise Park due to lightning strikes. One home in Kurtistown appeared to have been struck by lightning on 12/19/09. The owner was not home at the time and upon returning, she found her home had been reduced to a pile of ashes. She lost everything and the Red Cross assisted her with food, clothing, bedding, and crisis counseling.
