Agency Mission Statement:
Strengthening families and fostering the healthy development of children.

Funded Program:
Domestic Abuse Shelter - West Hawaii: CFS' Domestic Abuse Shelter Program provides victims and their families with a safe haven where there is access to temporary shelter, provision for basic needs (food, clothing, personal care items, etc.), supportive counseling services, and services for children. The philosophy of the program is to provide a safe and healthy environment in order to assist victims of domestic violence to gain self-esteem and overall self-determination.

Sexual Abuse Treatment Services - Big Island: provides comprehensive services for families and individuals who have experienced intra-familial sexual abuse. Services are provided to child and adult victims, non-abusive parents, alleged juvenile and adult offenders, and siblings. Treatment is provided through individual, dyad, family therapy and an extensive group program. Groups are provided for teen victims, pre-teen victims, siblings, non-abusive parents, offenders and alleged juvenile offenders as indicated. Treatment services are offered to each available family member and are based on the diagnostic assessment and service plan determined at intake. The program model emphasizes work with the entire family, offering a spectrum of services depending on needs and number of clients. In general, treatment is expected to be long-term in nature in as much as the problems are severe, complex, and of long etiology.

Alternatives to Violence - Youth Service Program - Big Island: provides a comprehensive range of Domestic Violence Intervention Services aimed at increasing victim safety, minimizing effects of violence on victims, and reducing the offender's level of risk and use of violence. These services are provided to adult and juvenile offenders, ordered by Family Court, as well as victims, and child and adolescent witnesses to violence. Clients of both genders, including same sex partners are accepted for services. The Youth Service Program provides Anger Management services to youths who commit an act or acts of violence including patterns of assault, controlling behavior, physical, sexual and/or psychological abuse towards an intimate partner, including same sex partners, and a non-intimate family member or unrelated individual. The philosophy of the program is to provide the youth with the knowledge of the nature and dynamics of violent behavior and teach them how to resolve problem issues with non-violent methods. In addition, the youth is expected to take responsibility for their violent behaviors and not to blame others.

Client Outcome Stories:
Domestic Abuse Shelter: A women with three minor children who witnessed domestic violence by the husband sought shelter. She developed a safety plan and received education on co-dependency, parenting, healthy relationships, and the effects on children who witness Domestic Violence. Case management provided her with the necessities to transition to a safe home by assisting her in obtaining food stamps, childcare and household items.

Sexual Abuse Treatment Services: Four-year old AZ was sexually abused by her father. Specialized sexual abuse treatment provided her a safe place to rebuild trust, bond with caregivers and learn age appropriate behaviors. She's able to place responsibility on the offender; not herself. She no longer wets the bed, exhibits sexualized behaviors and can say no to inappropriate touch and tell an adult.

Alternatives to Violence - Youth Services Program: CH was the "popular" kid on campus. He used his anger to bully peers into "respecting" him. Through the Youth Services Program, CH learned the tools and skills necessary to better control his anger and use it in a positive way. Six months after successfully completing the program, he has used these skills to earn respect without bullying others.
