Agency Mission Statement:
The Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii is a community of people united by a shared vision to build a healthier Hawaii for all to live, work, and play. Together we are building partnerships and collaborations; exposing tobacco's harm; protecting our youth; creating healthier communities; and saving lives.
Funded Program:
Youth Prevention / Advocacy Program: intent is to increase knowledge of youth about tobacco industry tactics targeting youth and to result in reducing preventable diseases and premature deaths as a result of tobacco industry tactics, the harms of tobacco use, and secondhand smoke. The program also provides tools , information and the mechanisms to make healthy lifestyle choices - living tobacco - free, eating healthy and being physically active. The program long-term outcomes strive to prevent the initiation of tobacco use among youth and reduce the prevalence of tobacco use among youth through creating a social climate in which tobacco use becomes less desirable and acceptable, counteracting the influence of the tobacco industry.
Client Outcome Story: In 2008, youth from Pahoa wrote letters to the Hawaii County Council to pass Bill 224. An excerpt: "...I'm in the Boys & Girls Club and we cleaned up Pohoiki Beach.......I picked up so much cigarette butts and it was disgusting. I do not like it because I have to clean it up and I don't smoke."
