Agency Mission Statement:
Hawaii Island Adult Care, Inc.’s (HIAC) mission is “to advocate for and assist the frail elderly, physically/mentally challenged adults and their caregivers in maintaining their independence and dignity as active members in the life of the community.”
Funded Programs:
Hilo Adult Day Center: provides a safe, socially active daytime environment for frail elders, stroke debilitated and Alzheimer's disease individuals, and mentally/physically challenged adults needing service regardless of their ability to pay. This program provides an active alternative to institutionalism, addresses the problem of being alone at home at risk of falls, etc. and allows caregivers resipte and continued to be employed. A stimulating program provides for dignity and self worth for those who are in the last years of their lives.
Senior Helpers: provides in-home assistance to home-bound frail elders and mentally/physically challenged adults needing services regardless of their ability to pay (as much as is possible). This program provides and active alternative to institutionalism; addresses safety and cleanliness in the home, services provided include chore care, meal preparation, personal care, transportation and companionship.
Hilo Adult Day Center Client Outcome Story: JD was at risk for depression and loss of independence, impaired cognition, and difficulty accepting disfigurement of skull from craniotomy surgery, when she entered HIAC in 2005. She now ambulates without assistance, maintains her personal hygiene, selects appropriately challenging activities that help with her cognitive and functional abilities. She is self confident, positive and helpful to staff and table-mates.
Senior Helpers Client Outcome Story: 67 year old male, Muscular Dystrophy, Motor Neuron Disease, Arthritis, and Hypertension. Uses power wheel chair and walker, has companion dog. Benefits greatly from weekly house cleaning, alleviates depression, clutter and clean environment is maintained for client. Client continues to enjoy a clean home and enjoys weekly socialization.
