Agency Mission Statement:
To Provide a safe environment, an impartial process and trained personnel for the delivery of affordable dispute resolution services to the East Hawaii community.
Funded Program:
Mediation Training Program: trains mediators to addresses the over burned judiciary, law enforcement and social service agencies from having to handle some of the civil disputes that occur between neighbors, Ohana, businesses and consumers they serve.
Mediation Program: provides a safe and confidential environment where a disagreement can be resolved quickly, affordable, with long lasting results. Because conflict is a part of life and occurs at all economic levels and in all ethnicities, Ku'ikahi is in a unique position to have a positive influence on community well-being and relations by helping to resolve conflict within and among all the other individuals, businesses, agencies, and organizations that comprise our community. We create bridges and opportunities for communication among all who are willing to participate.
Client Outcome Story: A young couple with three children moved into their new home and soon discovered their neighbor, who was disabled and lived in a tent, yelled obscenities and played loud music in the night. After reasoning ended, things escalated into intentional provocations, and they became afraid. In desperation they filed a Restraining Order. In mediation, they learned the man had disorders from his military service and without his medication, could not control his anger. The man learned that his behavior had really frightened them, told his story and overwhelmed the couple with compassion. The father asked if he could help the man build a floor and move the tent to the other side of the property, and the man said yes. Then, the church members of the family heard about the situation, and chipped in to help the man build a much better place to live. Mediation made a difference in these folks lives; the police and courts were simply not the right tool to resolve this conflict.
