The Office for Social Ministry works to meet the challenges of ever-changing community needs by utilizing spiritual, human and material resources, to empower those in need to live with dignity and respect.

Funded Programs

  • Hawaii Island Food Basket
    The Food Bank Basket salvages edible food from wholesalers, retailers and farmers that would otherwise be dumped and distributes this food to needy people in the community through a network of not-for-profit organizations and raised consciousness regarding hunger.
  • Care-A-Van Outreach Program for the Homeless
    Mobile outreach team assists homeless into permanent supportive housing, leading to self-sufficiency by offering payee services, rental subsidies, and 24-hour on-call landlord support.
  • Mobile Care Health Project
    The Project provides primary dental care for the low-income uninsured and under-insured population; provides dental assessments and fluoride treatments and prevention education through health fairs and school outreach efforts.
  • Beyond Shelter Transitional Housing Program
    The Office for Social Ministry began a transitional housing program Beyond Shelter, on June 1, 2006 at 110 Ululani Street, Hilo, HI. Private apartments units for eight families are available at Beyond Shelter in the form of six – 2 bedroom units with 2 baths, one bedroom unit with 1 bath and one studio with 1 bath. Families are expected to participate in on –site program/classes, have the abilities to pay program fees, be good neighbors and commit to seek employment, complete job readiness programs if necessary to prepare for the workforce and/ explore educational opportunities.

  • Ponahawai Ola Transitional Housing Program  OSM acts collectively with the State’s correctional and judiciary agencies to identify offenders at risk of homelessness for placement in our transitional housing program, prior to offenders’ release. Special needs and diagnoses are assessed before entry into the program is possible, and preparatory actions are made to create and individualized support network for each exited offender – including necessary linkages to treatment facilities for those diagnosed with substance use issues, mental illness, and /orco-occurring disorders.
