What We Do

The Hawaii Island United Way serves and supports the extended 'Ohana of people who live on this beautiful island we all call home. We are a collaborative networking agency, driven by community volunteers. Your tax deductible donations are invested in specific programs, offered by local organizations with excellent track records of service.

These vital programs and services touch the lives of nearly everyone on our island, from the cradle to the rocking chair.

Investing in Essential Programs

It begins with you and your donation.
1 Trained HIUW volunteers meet with partner agencies to review programs and services needed on Hawaii Island.
1 HIUW distributes your donations to partner agencies, investing in specific programs with measurable results.
1 Program outcomes are routinely measured for "Results We Can See!" By tracking successes, we are better able to address the changing needs of our community.

While the majority of United Way agencies across the nation offer non-restricted funding to health and human service non-profit agencies; the Hawaii Island United Way (HIUW) invests in programs. Program funding lends itself to clear accountability, providing the means to measure specific outcomes for results we can all see.

The Hawaii Island United Way “partners” with health and human service organizations on the Big Island, who have a strong track record in providing vital services to local communities. In most cases we fund programs that, in fact, receive multiple funding sources. The reason being, if one source becomes unavailable the service will continue due to funding support. In some cases HIUW provides seed money for non-profit agencies that are designed to either fill a gap or promote a special service. Be assured that the Hawaii Island United Way casts a wide net; targeting programs that touch the lives of individuals and families from the cradle to the rocking chair.
