Agency Mission Statement:
To support and improve the quality and availability of care for the young people of Hawaii.

The organizational vision is to provide families with information and resources needed when they are looking for quality child care. Support the professional development of caregivers through training, improve the quality of care they are providing and better understand the needs of the market. Provide data and services to the community to maximize the quality of the care-giving experience and increase the number of quality caregivers.

Funded Programs:
Program Enhancement Project aka Cash for Caring: provides reimbursement grants to cover the costs of improvements in a family child care business. The program gives family care providers the incentive and the financial ability to invest in improving their child care programs. The eligible costs must clearly be toward quality improvement-and thus this "improves and supports the quality" of care for the young people of Hawaii.

Early Childhood Education Scholarship Program: provides reimbursement grants to cover costs of higher education classes in early childhood education (ECE). The program gives people the incentive and financial ability to invest in improving their professional development if they are already in the field, while giving newcomers the incentive and financial ability to join in. The eligible cost must clearly be to cover only ECE classes in higher learning institutions, encouraging some to choose this field of study and practice. Thus this "improves and supports the quality and availability of care for the young people of Hawaii".

Client Outcome Stories:
Program Enhancement Project aka Cash for Caring: Melissa K.M. Lindsey just received a Cash for Caring grant funded by Hawaii Island United Way and sent a letter of deep appreciation. She writes that the grant has helped her join the Scholastic Book Club and now she will be receiving children's books each month to share with the keiki in her care. She is looking forward to building "literacy in reading and building their own little library." Melissa also used the funds to replace some unsafe flooring in her house.

Early Childhood Education (ECE) Scholarship Program: Robin Fisher, a Family Child Care Provider pursuing her Bachelors in Early Childhood Education (ECE), has used the program multiple times to help pay for some of her ECE classes. She has increased her understanding of the concepts needed for children to learn and creates effective lesson plans. She is proud of successfully transitioning a child with special needs from her program to a special education preschool.
