Agency Mission Statement:
The mission of the Arc of Hilo is to improve the quality of life for people with developmental and other disabilities, who reside on Hawai'i through educational, vocational and skill training as well as employment and residential opportunities.
Funded Program:
Kokua Program: This program helps people with developmental disabilities receive needed services in the short-term, while simultaneously seeking funding for a longterm, stable support services plan.
The Arc of Hilo serves families and children with disabilities who do not have Medicaid referrals and cannot qualify for it or other services due to unique circumstances. The Arc of Hilo will document the need and provide services to these individuals on an interim basis until they do qualify for Medicaid services or have found alternative funding sources to cover this need.
Client Outcome Story: Last year a 25 year old with developmental disability from Palau moved to Hilo with his family. They couldn't get any services for him during the day so that they could work. They came to the Arc of Hilo and we enrolled him into our Kokua Program where he was able to attend our day program 5 days a week. Soon, his parents were both at work and their son was happy to come to the Arc of Hilo everyday. We assisted his parents in applying for two different programs for long term funding for services. He was eligible for one of the two and was admitted into that program. He now attends the day program with full funding from the State of Hawaii, leaving an opening in the Kokua Program for another person to begin to receive services.
