The YWCA of Hwai`i Island, in association with the YWCA Worldwide and YWCA USA us a women's membership movement nourished by its roots in the Christian faith and sustained by the richness of many beliefs and values. Strengthened by diversity, the YWCA draws together members who strive to create opportunities for women's growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people.
Funded Program:
YWCA Developmental Preschool: The intent of the program is that every child participating in the program be socially and emotionally secure within themselves so that they are able to develop to their fullest potential and be school ready when entering Kindergarten. Our preschool offers a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate, in an environment that is safe and nurturing for each child. Young children are prepared for success in school and set on a path that leads to becoming a life-long learner when they are provided positive interactions, opportunities for social and cognitive growth through the preschool environment along with family and community support.
All children in Hawaii should start school ready to succeed. It is proven and documented that 85% of a child's development takes place in their first five years of life. Early childhood Education and care reduces the academic achievement gap, along with minimizing future governmental social costs. Children who get their start in preschool are more likely to continue on to higher education and more likely to succeed as adults.
Client Outcome Story: Letter from participant: The many daily and varied activities at the Cottage such as creative time, crafts, cooking and projects are preparing our daughter for kindergarten in a setting that is fun and educational. In addition to learning to write letters and numbers, she is learning to be patient, to listen to others, to lead as well as to follow. I am confident that after her Cottage experience, our daughter’s transition from a preschooler to kindergarten student will be smooth and successful.
